Chapter 38
Andrewâs party was going strong when I arrived. This time, I didnât bring any alcohol with me, deciding I should probably try to avoid corrupting the youth as much as I could. Iâd need to take another soul soon, but for tonight, Iâd be OK.
âHey, about time you got here!â Andrew greeted me when I walked in.
âGot sidetracked,â I replied easily. Truth was, Iâd wandered around the city trying to convince more people to help with the carnival. Iâd been successful in arranging a few more vendors and had scoped out a few bands I wanted to show Maggie.
âI bet,â Andrew grinned, assuming Iâd meant something else entirely. âJess is here.â
âYeah?â I asked idly, not really caring.
âSheâs been asking about you. She had a thing for Lance, but since heâs with Maggie now, sheâs on the prowl more than usual. And you did take her to homecoming. In her eyes, that means something.â
âWhy havenât you hit it yet?â I asked.
âIâm not her kind of guy.â He shrugged, sipping his beer. âPlus, she seems a little too high-maintenance for my taste.â
âAnd you think Iâm down with high-maintenance chicks?â I snorted.
âI didnât say you had to marry her, dude. Iâm just saying sheâs kind of easy, and she obviously wants you. I havenât really seen you pay attention to anyone but Maggie, and since you and Jess are in the same boat on that subject, I figured Iâd throw you a bone.â
âNo thanks, man. Iâm good.â I slapped him on the back.
âSuit yourself. If you change your mind, sheâs over there with Corbin,â Andrew said.
I followed his gaze and saw her chatting animatedly with Corbin, who had a small smile on his face. It wasnât his smile that revealed his feelings. It was his eyes, and they looked like heâd much rather screw her and throw her over a bridge after. I excused myself from Andrew and made my way over to Jess and Corbin.
âHey,â I said, clearing my throat as I stopped beside Jess. She looked at me, and her eyes lit up.
âBrax!â she exclaimed a little drunkenly, throwing her arms around my neck and planting a sloppy kiss on my lips.
âWow.â I pushed her away and shot a look at Corbin, who was staring at us with his tiny signature smirk on his face.
âBrax, I didnât think youâd be coming tonight,â he said as Jess pawed at me.
I forced a smile on my face and gently pushed her away again. âI figured I wasnât doing anything else,â I replied.
âNo?â He looked uninterested, and his green eyes scanned the room. âJess, love, why donât you have another drink, so the men can talk?â
âOK,â she said with a titter, running her hand down my arm. I ground my teeth and shot a look at Corbin, who only continued to smirk at me.
âWhat are you doing?â I hissed when Jess had stumbled away.
âWhatever do you mean, brother?â
âYou know what I mean! You have her drinking like a fish and pawing at me,â I grumbled.
